Hi Burgeo,
I'd love to visit you - maybe some day. My great great grandfather was John Cunningham who came to Burgeo around 1850. He was the Anglican minister in Burgeo and surrounds until his death in the 1890s. My great grand father, William Edward Cunningham also grew up in Burgeo. I'd love to here from anyone with any knowledge of or connection to the Cunningham family.

I would like all information about fresh and salt water fishing situations and requirements in Burgeo. We have been to Burgeo a number of times and we love it and the Gillette Motel, but we've never come as anglers as we're new to this sport. We're thinking of a week or so next year in late september for our 50th anniversary. Your help concerning this plan will be appreciated. Rick

I was born in Cul de Sac and moved to Ontario in the early 60's. I have been visiting relatives (Marsdens/Durnfords) ever since. I love that no matter where I go or who I see everyone is friendly and makes me feel like I belong. I may not live in Burgeo but a big piece of my heart is left behind when I have to leave. Can't wait till September 16th/2011 for my next visit. Only 28 more sleeps.

Hi there,
Am trying to organise a trip to Burgeo in the next few weeks. I am planning to take my Great Aunt who is 93 and 3/4! But still going strong. She told me that before her husband died she had been to every place in Newfoundland that had a road, but Burgeo didn't have one back then. I'd like to take her there, so she doesn't ever feel like she missed anything. I'm not sure what's there, food? accommodations? and a little kitchen party would be good to stumble upon. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance!

Burgeo is a wonderful place to live, to raise your children. Many people feel there is nothing to do...well there is plenty! The beaches are simply MIND-BLOWING. The trails are fantastic. Camp sites are second to none!! The sand and Sea Festival is great. Berry picking, fishing, hiking, biking, photography, sight seeing from Maiden Tee Hill, if you have a boat...BOATING!! There are numerous activities at the Storm Stadium during the winter and summer monthes, skiing, and yeah! If you are a hunter, MOOSE HUNTING! The museum is an interesting place to visit. If you are a reader, visit the Library. Kids, the playground is always fun...basketball, tennis, slides and swings. There are restaurants and a bed and breakfast, and motel. There is a new trail at Aaron's Arm now as well that is simply beautiful!
We may not have MacDonald's or Timmies, but the people are sweet and the food is great. So if you are planning a trip, any time of the year, why not check us out!?

A life-time ago, my mother, then a young girl in England, wrote to the "Family Herald" penpal page, and subsequently established correspondance with a number of young women across Canada. One of these was "Lorna Samways" from Burgeo - my mother died recently at age of 96 years, and on looking at old pictures we found one of Burgeo beach. Just curious if there are any "Samways" still around Burgeo! My mother emigrated to Ontario in 1947, and spent the rest of her life on Manitoulin Island.

The pictures of Burgeo are stunning. My grandfather was born in Burgeo and had a rather large family. His name was Mathew Warren and was born in 1917 (ish!) and his brothers and sisters names were William, Norman, Maude, Mary, Mabel, Albert, Hilda. I believe there were 10 siblings in total. Have tried lots of ways to find any family as my mother is an only child and would love to find her fathers family.
If anyone has any info at all I would appreciate it greatly if they could email me at the above address.
Thank you

I feel strong ties to Burgeo as my father was born there.
Would love to visit one day and find out more about my heritage. My father's name was Frederick William Mitchell and he was born in 1897. My uncle James Mitchell born 1898 lived in Burgeo area called Muddy Hole.
Also there was a younger sister Blanche who was sent to live with another family when my grandmother died when Blanche was very young.Blanche married a Spencer and had two sons. They would be my cousins and I think they may have moved away from Burgeo. My grandfather married Annie O'Hara. My grandfather was a fisherman and my father left Burgeo as a young man and became an Anglican minister. It is rather a long story but I would love to know more. Maybe I just have to visit Burgeo!!!

Absolutely one of the most beautiful places in all of Newfoundland & Labrador to live. I have dated my family ancestry to this area, espically the Grandy's Brook region,to Pre-European contact. I am of Mi'kmaq/Montagnais decent. For those who do not know the pre-history of Newfoundland & labrador,"Mi'kmaq L'nu'k (people)are decendance of the Maritime Archaic Indians, aka; Pre-Mi'kmaq Culture. Part from this, there is sufficient archaeological evidence in the Provinces Archives of NL. As well, archaeological sites have been uncovered throught the South & West coast of the Province, such as, T'wan/a/sik(Big Barasway,Little Barasway & Indian Hole),Connoir Bay, Temagan' Gespam - Axe Lake(Gables Pond).Other places to be noted are around Bay St'Georges and Stephenville areas. Mae'migwik - Big Fish River (Grandy's Brook) still bear the names of the Mi'kmaq who lived there. ie; Noel Joe's Brook,Peter John's Cove, Amie Pauls path, Bumbo's (Benoit's)Point, Caroline's (Caroline Joe)etc. The two Joe's mentioned here are the children of Chief Frank Joe. He was the last know Chief of the area. Graveyard Point gets it's name due to the fact the Mi'kmaq L'nu'k (people)use to put their dead upon scaffels in the woods there the winter, until they could transfer them to the graveyard in Ma/gat/koo/gwik - meaning; Where the waves roar and tumble. (Known today as Burgeo). Another familiar place name in Grandy`s Brook is Kaskiseboo meaning, Little brook at the brinks of the river.(Gul/sa/geese/brook - local name) Then there's Pokumiktek' meaning - Road through the wilderness, refering to the esker there.(Local name - Pom-wa-teech).Travelling to this area you will see Peter`s Woods(Peter John)to the north east of Dry Pond Brook. Louies Brook, near Rocky Ridges, gets it`s name from Ruben Lewis/Louis. In doing the proper research we can understand a little more of the history of this beautiful area, Ma/gat/koo/gwik - Where the waves roar and tumble. (Referring to the surf on the beaches of what we call 'Burgeo' today).

Other family members Lillian Strickland, Malida Strickland on my father's side Woodrow Wilson Green (whom joined the Army in Montreal and retired from the Army), Sister - June Green, Brothers Albert & Freeman Green from Cornerbrook or Port a Bass (I think). My father was from Burgeo and I can remember the one and only time i was able to visit, back in 1981. Beautiful place and wonderful people. I would love any contact with any relatives who are still in the area. My fathers name was James Edward Anderson he left Burgeo as a young boy aboard a scooner and eventually ended up in the merchant marine where he met my uncle and eventually my mother dorothy. He spent the rest of his life as a fishing captain in the St George area of New Brunswick. Any family information would be welcome, my grandmother's maiden name was Strickland. I am hoping to be able to get together a history to pass on to my children and the rest of my family.

A Newfoundland and Labrador beach has placed on a list of the best beaches in Canada. TripAtlas.com compiled a list of the best beaches across the country for summertime activities and attractions. Alongside places like Long Beach in Tofino, B.C., and the white, sandy beaches of the Isle de la Madeleine in Quebec, the site lists Newfoundland and Labrador's Sandbanks Provincial Park in the Burgeo Islands as a fantastic location for hiking, kayaking, spotting herds of caribou and exploring sand dunes, all with a picturesque backdrop of Annieopsquotch Mountains. The website notes it's one of Canada's best kept secrets.

Probably the most boring place i've ever been besides CB. People- get some
stores and life into the 'community'. I brought my neice there last week.. not
one thing to do. As for recreation.. moose hunting is listed. Moose hunting?!
COME ON.

Just looking at the site. Burgeo was very good to us and I really enjoyed the time there. It seems like another lifetime now and it is funny how time can change things.

I taught in Burgeo ('75 - '76), staying with Gladys and Bill Vardy. It was my first time ever in Newfoundland and I couldn't have met nicer people than those I met in Burgeo. I haven't had a chance to get back for a visit but I hope to some day. ( and I still tell people about the beautiful Sandbanks!)

My husband and our daughter visited in august of 2008, along with my parents. It was so beautiful. We enjoyed the trip very much and will be back soon. My grandmother, Lottie Hann, grew up in Burgeo her father was the lighthouse keeper, way back when it was opperated by a person. While we were in Burgeo we visited cousins of my fater's Lou&Cora Hann, I'd like to say thank you to them for thier hospitality and for giving us the grand tour, my husband is still talking about Cora's traditonal NFLD home cooked meal! And to our other cousin Allister for taking to see it from the ocean in his boat.
Thanks so much, be back soon!

Just read about the figure skating in your community and wanted to let you know about a NL skating apparel company that is online and sells apparel really cheap. I just thought you may let your community members know they can order from here.

Just looked up your website because I thought back to 2004 or was it 2005 when my husband and I and our dog visited Burgeo and, in particular, Sandbank National Park. We camped there in June (just before blackfly season). It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Some day I'll be back.

I have never been to Burgeo but my grandmother was. Her name last name was Lucy Anderson (nee Matheson) and her parents were Henry and Susan Anderson. I have always wondered about our family history. If anyone knows about my grandmother's roots I would love to hear about it.

Hi, there everyone,At the ripe old age of 11 i left Burgeo with my family and have only been back once,i could never afford the return and miss it very much. It brings tears to my eyes everytime i think of it. A lot of people say i am no longer a Newfoundlander because i haven't been back,so why do i ache for it so much, god willing i'll be back some day, To once again walk along its coastal shores and relive the beauty she holds.I have a small wall clock my father brought me back quite a few years ago and on it ,it says Barren but Beautiful. Burgeo you are always in my heart, the family and friends i left behind i will never know.I always say if my kids could see this place, then and only then will they know what i have spoken of for so many years. The beauty you only experience if you live there. Enjoy her as much as you can.No other place can compare........

Hi; In 1984/85 I spent some time in your community with Katimavik. I was part of one of the groups that were building a log cabin (somewhere between Burgeo and Stevenville I believe). It was to be used by groups such as Sea Cadets etcetera. I billeted with Gerald and Doris (I think) MacDonald and their boys. Burgeo is an amazing place and I have some wonderful memories from there.
